The PIL was filed seeking direction for proper implementation of the "Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007" and Rules framed thereunder.
The Allahabad High Court on Tuesday directed the District Welfare Officer, Lucknow to file a report on the condition of the Old Age Homes run by the State within three weeks.
The bench of Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Shree Prakash Singh was dealing with a Public Interest Litigation filed by one Jyoti Rajpoot pertaining to the problems being faced by unattended, sick, and abandoned senior citizens.
Rajpoot specifically brought one old lady namely Anjali Devi's case before the high court who was left abandoned. However, after Court's intervention, the old lady was shifted to an Old Age Home run by the State.
Through this PIL, Rajpoot also raised the issue of deficiency in proper implementation of "The maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007".
In pursuance of Court's last order, the state government informed the court that various steps have been taken for appropriate implementation of the aforesaid Act and rules made thereunder.
Taking note of the same, Court asked the Additional District Magistrate, Lucknow to file an affidavit regarding the steps which have been taken or are proposed to be taken for proper implementation of the aforesaid Act within three weeks.
Court further directed that the abovesaid affidavit, sworn by the Additional District Magistrate, Lucknow, shall be prepared in consultation with District Social Welfare Officer, Lucknow, and the District Probation Officer, Lucknow.
Directing thus, Court posted the matter on September 13, 2022 for further hearing.
