Synopsis

On June 28, the high court directed the makers of Adipurush to appear in person on July 27. However, they approached the Apex Court seeking relief against the high court order. The top court will hear the matter on July 21.

In the amendment plea in a PIL that has been filed against the film 'Adipurush', the Allahabad High Court today refused to pass any orders.

The bench of Chief Justice Pritinker Diwaker and Justice Jaspreet Singh told the petitioners to raise their concerns on July 27, when the PIL is listed for the next hearing.

The concerned PIL was filed by Social Activists Kuldeep Tiwari and Bandana Kumar through advocates Ranjana Agnihotri and Sudha Sharma in October last year seeking stay on the release of the movie. The petitioners had then referred to the trailer of the film.

However, through the present amendment plea, the petitioners urged that since the movie is now released and it appeared that Film Censor Board (Board) had failed to discharge its statutory obligations, therefore, the PIL petition was required to be amended to place all the facts pertaining to the case.

The petitioners, therefore, sought court's permission to allow them to amend the memo of the PIL petition.

It is the petitioners' submission that movie Adipurush presents a totally false and baseless narrative that is against decency, morality and lowers the dignity and prestige of God and Goddesses. Such obnoxious story hurt the feeling of the followers of Sanatan Dharma, they have claimed.

The movie which was relesed on June 16, 2023 has faced backlash for its controversial depiction of the characters of story of Lord Rama.

Several petitions have been filed throughout the country to ban the screening of the movie. The claims are that not only it shows some deities distorting and destroying their fundamental values but also the story of the movie is also not in conformitiy with the Valmiki Ramayana, etc. as was being claimed by the makers of the movie.

The Allahabad High Court, on June 28, directed the director of the film 'Adipurush' Om Raut, its dialogues writer Manoj Muntashir @ Manoj Shukla along with Bhushan Kumar to appear in person along with their personal affidavits explaining their bonafide on July 27.

However, the makers and the actors, approached the Supreme Court seeking relief against the order of the high court. Now the matter is pending before the top court which will hear it on July 21.

Moreover, another PIL by Mamta Rani, a practicing advocate, is also pending before the Apex Court through which the certificate granted by Central Board of Film Certification to Adipurush has been sought to be cancelled.
