Court was hearing a plea filed by two inmates, including Geeta Arora alias Sonu Punjaban, seeking its intervention to ensure proper food is provided to them and hygiene is maintained in the cooking area and canteen.
The Delhi High Court on Thursday formed a three-member committee to conduct surprise checks at Tihar Jail to gather information on the food being served to inmates and the level of hygiene at the prison.
The bench of Justice Prathiba M. Singh was hearing a plea by two inmates, including Geeta Arora alias Sonu Punjaban, seeking its intervention to ensure proper food is provided to them and hygiene is maintained in the cooking area and canteen.
The petitioner’s case was that despite there being a prescribed diet in the Delhi Prison Rules in terms of quality and nourishment, the same is not being followed in the Tihar Jail, which adversely affects the physical health of the inmates.
Advocate Adit Pujari for the petitioner contended that after 6 pm once the inmates are lodged inside their respective cells, no food is available to them. He further stated that the canteen does not store or sell fruits that could be purchased by the inmates.
On the contrary, the counsel for the Jail superintendent, Tihar Jail stated that a judge conducted a visit last month and all requisite rules were complied with.
Taking note of the submissions, the single-judge bench said, “The three-member committee is constituted for inspection… Let the committee conduct at least two inspections and submit a report by the next date of hearing.”
Accordingly, the court posted the matter for further consideration on July 20, 2023.Case Title: Geeta Arora alias Sonu Punjaban & Anr. v. Jail Superintendent Central Jail-06
