Synopsis

A fire broke out in the office of the Uttar Pradesh Advocate General on Sunday.

A letter petition has been filed before the Allahabad High Court Chief Justice for an inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the recent fire incident at the Advocate General's Office.

A fire broke out in the office of the Uttar Pradesh Advocate General located in Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar building on Sunday. Some CRPF security personnel, who were on night duty, detected smoke coming from the AG Office building and informed the control room. The fire station was also notified and immediate action was taken, however, it took 6-7 hours to control the fire.

Stating that reason for the fire is still unknown and around 25,000 case files along with other important documents have been destroyed in the fire, Advocate Gaurav Dwivedi, the petitioner, has also sought suspension of all the government officials involved in the incident.

Dwivedi has argued that the issue of the failure of the fire safety equipment installed at the AG office must be inquired into as when the incident occurred, the automatic fire extinguisher system did not activate by itself and the fire alarm didn't alert the fire brigade.

Alleging that it is evident from this incident that the fire protection system was not in working condition due to lack of attention towards its maintenance, Dwivedi, has stated that it is none but Nagar Nigam, Prayagraj should be held responsible for the whole incident.

"That also, a news article published by the Times of India on 26.01.2009 states that the responsibility of the completion of the project of the construction of the building of the Advocate General Office, Allahabad High Court was given by the State Government to the Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam and the Public Work Department (PWD) of construction and design," Dwivedit's letter reads.

Therefore, Dwivedi has prayed that in the interest of justice, it is necessary that the high court takes suo moto cognizance of the incident and orders an inquiry against those who are responsible for the failure of the fire safety equipment at the AG office.
