NIA Court Ernakulam sentences three in Kalamassery bus burning Case

Synopsis

The case pertains to the Kalamassery bus burning incident wherein damage was caused to a Tamil Nadu government bus plying between Ernakulam and Salem in support of a demand for the release of Abdul Nasar Madani, Chairman of People’s Democratic Party (PDP), who was detained in Coimbatore Jail.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) Special Court, Ernakulam on Monday i.e August 1, 2022, sentenced three accused persons in the Kalamassery bus burning case for causing damage to a Tamil Nadu government bus plying between Ernakulam and Salem in support of their demand for the release of Abdul Nasar Madani, Chairman of People’s Democratic Party (PDP), who was detained in Coimbatore Jail.

The sentences awarded to the three convicts are:

  1. Nazeer Thadiyantavidatha @ Ummer Haji @ Haji has been sentenced to 7 Years of Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) and a fine of Rs. 235000/- for the offenses under section 120B, 121A, 323, 364, 435, 506(ii) of IPC section 4 of PDPP Act besides sections 16(1)(b) and18 of UA (P) Act.
  2. Sabir Buhari has been sentenced to 7 Years of Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) and a fine of Rs. 235000/- for the offenses under sections 120B, 121A, 323, 364, 435, 506(ii) of IPC section 4 of PDPP Act besides sections 16(1)(b) and18 of UA (P) Act.
  3. Thajudin has been sentenced to 6 Years of RI and a fine of Rs. 160000/- for the offense under section 120B, 121A, 323, 364 of IPC, 435, 506(ii) of IPC, section 4 of PDPP Act besides sections 16(1)(b) and 18 of UA (P) Act.

As per the NIA Press release, the case was initially registered on September 9, 2005, at Kalamassery Police Station, District Ernakulum, Kerala, and was taken over for investigation by NIA on January 22, 2010.

After thorough investigations, a charge sheet was filed by NIA on December 17, 2010, against 13 accused persons.

“Trials against other 8 accused persons, including one absconding accused, are in progress”, the NIA press release stated.
