1984 Anti-Sikh riots| Supreme Court seeks CBI's response in Balwan Khokhar's plea for suspension of sentence

Synopsis

In the instant case, five Sikhs were killed and a Gurdwara in Raj Nagar area of Palam Colony, New Delhi was burnt down on November 1, 1984

The Supreme Court today has asked Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to file its response withing two weeks on a plea by former Congress Councillor Balwan Khokhar who is serving life imprisonment in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case.

ASG Aishwarya Bhati appearing for CBI sought some time submitting that, "On last three occasions bail has been denied..". Court was further told that a report from the jail authorities on his conduct has to be sought.

A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan has accordingly given time to CBI for filing a response.

In March this year, Khokhar had also approached top court with a furlough plea.

Along with Khokhar, former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar is also lodged in Tihar jail since their conviction in 2018.

Anti-Sikh riots had broken out in the country after the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her two Sikh bodyguards.

Khokhar was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment by the trial court in 2013. In 2018, Delhi High Court had also affirmed the trial court's order.
