National Commission for Women (NCW) has written to the Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police, seeking action against Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav over his tweets made on former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma after the Supreme Court had refused to allow her plea seeking transfer of FIRs filed against her to Delhi.
NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma has sought immediate action against the former chief minister under “relevant provisions of law” over Yadav's tweet in which he said that “not only the face but the body should also apologise”.
“NCW has also sought a fair & time-bound investigation in the matter. Action taken must be apprised within 3 days,” the commission has tweeted.
Nupur Sharma, while speaking live in a TV debate, on the Gyanvapi Mosque issue, made certain comments on Prophet Mohammed, which triggered a row. BJP, the party to which she belonged, subsequently suspended her.
Last week, Sharma approached the Top Court stating that "the FIRs and the death threats are a clear and coordinated campaign intended to silence Petitioner's right to freedom of speech and expression, guaranteed under Article 19 (3) (a), and right to life and personal liberty guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution of India, 1950".
While refusing to entertain her plea, a vacation bench of Justices Surya Kant and JB Pardiwala had remarked that Sharma was single-handedly responsible for what has happened in the country.
Aggrieved by such remarks made by the Top Court, a letter petition has also been filed addressing the Chief Justice of India, seeking a direction to the vacation bench headed by Justice Surya Kant to withdraw their observations.
Filed by activist Ajay Gautam, the letter petition seeks a declaration that the observations made by the bench were uncalled for.
