"No proposal to increase the retirement age of Supreme Court and High Court Judges": Law Minister Kiren Rijiju

Rijiju further said that the Constitution (114th Amendment) Bill was introduced in 2010 to increase the retirement age of High Court Court judges to 65, however, it was not taken up.

Law Minister Kiren Rijiju, in response to the questions raised by Rajya Sabha Member Kanakamedala Ravindra Kumar, said that there is no proposal to increase the retirement age of Supreme Court and High Court Judges.

In the Monsoon Session of the Parliament, Kumar raised the question in the parliament that whether Government has any proposal to increase the retirement age of Judges of High Courts and the Supreme Court?

Kumar had further sought the details in this regard and if there is no proposal, reasons reason for the same.

Answering this, Rijiju said, "The Constitution (114th Amendment) Bill was introduced in 2010 to increase the retirement age of High Court Court judges to 65. However, it was not taken up for consideration in Parliament and lapsed with the dissolution of 15th Lok Sabha."

It may also be noted that, earlier, A letter was also written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting him to increase the retirement age of the judges in Subordinate Courts and High Courts.

The letter written by Advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay states that “the Indian Judiciary would take around 100 years to clear the backlog”
