The State Government's order providing grants to Durga Puja committees has been contested in the case.
A Public Interest Litigation plea in the Calcutta High Court has challenged the State Government's order allowing/ increasing grants to Durga Puja committees.
The Calcutta Government has recently announced Rs. 60000 grant to Durga Puja organizing committees. Whereas, the plea has submitted that this will cost around Rs 300 crores to the Government.
The plea has been filed in view of the recent increase in the financial support for each of the over 40,000 committees that organise Durga puja in the state from Rs 50,000 to Rs 60,000.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday announced that she will dedicatedly uphold the glory of Durga Puja through enhanced subsidy on electricity, continuation of tax concessions, and increased assistance to puja committees. "We will ensure that the grandeur of Puja remains intact," she added.
CM Banerjee has also allowed a 60% rebate on the electricity bill.
