Synopsis

Shroff asserted that various entities utilize his name, images, voice, and the colloquial term "Bhidu" without obtaining his explicit consent, thereby infringing his rights

Bollywood Actor Jackie Shroff, recently, approached the Delhi High Court against what he perceives as the unauthorized utilization of the term ‘Bhidu’ and other aspects of his persona.

The bench of Justice Sanjeev Narula sought a response from the peppy store (defendants) in Shroff’s plea filed through Advocate Pravin Anand. The court listed the matter for further consideration on May 15.

Shroff's legal team identified multiple instances of alleged infringement, which they have petitioned the court to address by blocking the respective links.

Fellow actors had initiated similar pleas including Anil Kapoor and Amitabh Bachchan. In September of the preceding year, the Delhi High Court issued an interim order in favor of Anil Kapoor, prohibiting various entities from exploiting his image, name, voice, or other facets of his persona for commercial purposes without his explicit consent.

Anil Kapoor's injunction encompassed a broad range of elements including his name, the acronym ‘AK’, specific character names like Lakhan, Mr. India, Majnu Bhai, Nayak, and the catchphrase ‘jhakaas’, alongside associated images, all requiring consent for usage. Furthermore, Kapoor sought protection against the misuse of advanced technologies such as AI-generated deepfakes and GIFs.

Amitabh Bachchan had also sought legal recourse, seeking an injunction to prevent a jeweler from leveraging his celebrity status to endorse their products without his authorization, thereby upholding his publicity rights.
