A local court in Varanasi district of Uttar Pradesh ordered shifting of 16 camels, which were allegedly being trafficked to West Bengal for slaughtering, to People for Animals (PFA), Animal Care Shelter & Veterinary Hospital, in Sirohi, Rajasthan after an application was filed by a charitable organisation, Gau Gyan Foundation.

In the letter petitioner, counsel for the foundation, Advocate Saurabh Tiwari has informed the court that hostile and contemptuous attitude of the District Magistrate, Varanasi towards the order of the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate has lead to death of 1 camel. The letter stated that the same will lead to the death of all the seized camels. (Out of 16 seized camels 1 is already dead and 2 are seriously ill).

The letter added that while refusing to comply with the order of the local Court, DM Varanasi cited in his order that there is no scheme for shifting of the Animals & State of U.P. has not provide budget for such type of thing.

DM has asked Gau Gyan Foundation to make proper arrangement for shifting the camels on own expense, the letter read.

Alleging this to be constitutional crisis, High Court's intervention has been sought to save the lives of the rest of the camels by sending them to People of Animal Care Shelter and Veterinary Hospital Sirohi, Rajasthan in their natural habitat.

Moreover, as mentioned in petition, a show cause notice has been issued to the DM, Varanasi by ACJM.

A First Information Report was lodged by one Mrs. R Lata Devi authorised representative of Gau Gyan Foundation on June 27th with Ram Nagar Police under section 11 of “The Prevention of Cruelty To Animals Act, 1960 and section 279 of the Indian Penal Code.
