Malik was convicted on May 19, 2022, in connection with the Jammu & Kashmir terror funding and secessionist activities case. The sentence was delivered on May 25, 2022, by NIA Judge Praveen Singh, who sentenced Malik to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs. 10 lakhs.
The Delhi High Court, recently, directed the Jail Authorities to provide adequate medical treatment and equipment to Jailed Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) terrorist Yasin Malik.
The bench of Justice Jasmeet Singh held, “The respondent shall ensure that adequate medical treatment and facilities are provided inside the jail to the petitioner, and are continued to be provided as per the jail procedures”.
A writ petition was filed under Article 226 of the Constitution of India seeking to direct the Jail Authorities to produce Yasin Malik’s medical treatment records. The aim was to facilitate appropriate directives for referring Malik to a suitable medical institution, such as AIIMS or any other Super Specialty Hospital in New Delhi or the region of Srinagar, Kashmir.
Advocate Md. Irshad Harif, representing Malik, submitted that Malik had been on a hunger strike since November 1, 2024 while in custody and urgently required medical treatment and hospitalization due to deteriorating health.
Considering the submissions, the court directed that Malik's medical status report be obtained from the Superintendent of Jail. Furthermore, the Superintendent was instructed to ensure that necessary medical treatment was provided to the petitioner per the Delhi Prison Rules, 2018.
The court, in the subsequent hearing, directed the jail authorities to ensure that adequate medical treatment and facilities were provided to Malik on the premises. Consequently, the court listed the matter for November 18, 2024.
In February 2024, the Delhi High Court was assured by the Central government on Wednesday that it would ensure all necessary medical treatment for Jailed Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) terrorist Yasin Malik whenever required.
