[Unnao Rape Case] Delhi HC Extends Relief Of Ex MLA Kuldeep Senger Till Jan 15

Read Time: 03 minutes

Synopsis

Senger received a life imprisonment sentence for the sexual assault of a minor girl in Unnao District, Uttar Pradesh, in 2017. Additionally, he was convicted and sentenced to a 10-year prison term in connection with the custodial death of the father of the Unnao rape victim.

The Delhi High Court, on Friday, extended the medical relief granted to former MLA Kuldeep Singh Senger until January 15, 2025. A bench comprising Justice Pratibha M. Singh and Justice Amit Sharma, while granting the extension, also took note of the large number of visitors meeting Senger. The court remarked, “We have not got such a report from AIIMS. You have too many visitors”.

Senger's counsel assured the court that this issue would not recur. It was argued that Senger, being unwell and a former MLA, attracted numerous well-wishers.

The counsel representing the victim's family strongly opposed the extension of relief, arguing that ‘If he (Senger) is to stay outside, then he should be under 24*7 CCTV monitoring’.

These submissions led to heated exchanges between the counsels, prompting the bench to deliberate in chambers before passing its order. The bench observed, “Obviously, we (court) cannot convince both of you”.

The victim's mother, who was present in court, voiced her objections to the medical relief granted to Senger.

Earlier, on December 5, the bench had directed the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) to submit a detailed report on Senger's medical condition to ascertain whether his treatment could be adequately managed within the jail premises. The court also granted interim bail to Senger.

Kuldeep Singh Senger was sentenced to life imprisonment in December 2022 for the rape of a minor in 2017. Previously, in 2022, a division bench comprising Justice Mukta Gupta and Justice Poonam A. Bamba had granted him interim bail for two months to attend his daughter's wedding.
