Synopsis

A Supreme Court bench of Justices Gavai and Narasimha yesterday refused to entertain a plea by the father of the schoolgirl who died in school campus at Kallakurichi in Tamil Nadu. The girl’s death led to violence breaking out in town.

The father had moved a plea asking the court to permit him to choose a doctor of his choice to be part of a team of experts to conduct a fresh postmortem on his daughter's body. The court, while refusing to entertain the plea, granted liberty to the father to approach the Madras high court and bring all the information to their notice.

According to the New Indian Express, the death of the girl, a 17-year-old Class 12 student studying at a private school in the Kallakurichi district of Tamil Nadu, triggered several protests. 

A protest that was allegedly organised by various organisations and political outfits before the school turned into a massive riot situation in which the protestors ransacked the entire school building. Some 15 school buses and three police vans were set on fire. A DIG and about 50 policemen were injured in stone-pelting. About 350 of them have been arrested so far for taking part in the violence after the Madras high court ordered the formation of special police teams to nab everyone and a re-postmortem of the body on Monday, this week.

Since the girl’s family, refused to accept the body for about a week, on the allegation of foul play. The Tamil Nadu State, on Tuesday, mentioned the plea before the Madras High Court stating that they are unable to locate the parents even after appointing a medical team to conduct autopsy.

The Madras High Court on Tuesday permitted the re-postmortem of the body of the girl, who committed suicide in Kallakurichi district of Tamil Nadu, even without her parent's cooperation.

On July 19, 2022, a Supreme Court bench led by Chief Justice of India, refused to pass interim order in the the father’s plea to stay the re-postmortem ordered by Madras High Court.
