The association recalled the injustice they faced over seven decades, accusing previous governments of neglecting their issues and problems and lamenting being deprived of their right to vote and lawful citizenship for political gains
A group of refugees from Pakistan, the West Pakistani Refugees (WPRs), have praised the Indian government's abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, describing it as a historic move that has brought justice to many unheard voices in the region.
The WPRs, who migrated from areas in present-day Pakistan during the 1947 partition, settled mainly in the Jammu, Kathua, and Rajouri districts of Jammu division. Approximately 5,764 families migrated to Jammu following the 1947 aggression by Pakistan.
During the meeting with the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Earth Sciences, MoS PMO, Department of Atomic Energy and Department of Space, MoS Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Dr. Jitendra Singh, the refugees expressed heartfelt gratitude for the government’s unwavering support. They stated, “We are deeply touched by the kindness and generosity shown towards us, ensuring our well-being and integration into Indian society.”
The refugees accused previous governments of neglecting their issues and problems, expressing sadness over being "deprived of their right to vote and lawful citizenship for political gains," according to a statement from the Personnel Ministry.
They hailed the abrogation of Article 370 as a historic move that brought justice to many "unheard voices" in Jammu and Kashmir. They also informed Minister Singh, who represents the Udhampur Lok Sabha constituency, about their plans for a grand celebration on August 5, marking five years since the abrogation of Article 370, which they said had "denied them citizenship and the right to vote for so many years."
On the sidelines, the association requested the minister to expedite compensation and address other grievances. Dr. Singh assured them of swift action and timely resolution of their issues. The association personally thanked Dr. Singh for his proactive efforts, which have alleviated their suffering and given them hope for a brighter future. “We pledge to contribute positively to our adopted homeland and strive towards its progress and prosperity. Thank you, Government of India, for embracing us with open arms and granting us a chance to begin anew,” the refugees stated.
