Synopsis

The Supreme Court, two days in a row has suggested that Solicitor General Tushar Mehta should come up with a second line of counsels to assist him in multiple cases being argued at the same time.

Yesterday, a bench of Justices BR Gavai and Sandeep Mehta had said. "You must also develop a second line Mr. Mehta...".

Court had said so after the SG sought permission to appear at 2PM as he was before the Constitution Bench in another matter.

Notably, the bench was hearing the West Bengal's plea challenging CBI's probe of cases in the state despite no consent.

"This is why yesterday we had remarked that we need more Tushar Mehtas. There should be some alternate accommodation...", Justice Gavai had added.

When the matter was taken up today, the bench mid-argument again hinted at more counsels being engaged to carry on behalf of the SG.

"The difficulty is, there are domain experts..that is the problem..if there is a core criminal case, I would like Raju (ASG) to address it..", the Solicitor General responded.

These remarks have been made by court in the backdrop of adjournments being sought when the law officers representing government functionaries are on their legs in a different court.
