A plea has been moved before the Allahabad High Court seeking the establishment of a committee/panel headed by a retired or sitting judge of the Supreme Court or a high court to ascertain the truth regarding the structure recently found in the Gyanvapi complex in Varanasi.

The plea filed in the Lucknow bench of the high court, states that it has been claimed by the Hindu side in the ongoing Gyanvapi dispute that the structure found during a videography survey of the complex is a Shivling, however, the mosque committee members have claimed it to be a part of the water fountain mechanism in the 'wazookhana' reservoir.

Therefore, demanding that the true nature of the structure must be ascertained, the plea has been filed by Sarve Sri Sudhir Singh, Baba Balak Das, Shivendra Pratap Singh, and Markande Tiwari, and Rajan Rai, Ravi Mishra and Atul Kumar claiming themselves to be devotees of Lord Shiva.

The petitioners have alleged that to control the communal tension prevailing in the country, it is necessary to determine the true nature of the structure found. If it is a Shivlinga then it should be handed over to Hindus for worshipping and if it is a fountain then it should be made functional, the petitioners have argued.

To be noted, the Civil Suit in the dispute is pending before the court of District Judge Varanasi AK Vishvesha, who will hear it next on July 4. The suit was filed by 5 women seeking performance of all rituals inside the Gyanvapi complex. The report of the survey was presented in court on May 19.
