Kanhaiya Lal was beheaded for allegedly expressing support for Nupur Sharma, the former BJP leader, in a social media post.
The National Investigation Agency on Thursday filed chargesheet before the NIA Special Court, Rajasthan against eleven accused, including two Pakistan Nationals, in connection with the brutal killing of Kanhaiya Lal Teli by two assailants on June 28, 2022.
“On June 28, 2022, the two assailants namely, Gos Mohammad and Riyaz Akhtar circulated the video of the murder of Kanhaiya Lal on social media to create panic and terror amongst the masses across the country”, the NIA press release stated.
The chargesheeted eleven persons are:
All the eleven accused have been charged under Sections 120B, 449, 302, 307, 324, 153(A), 153(B), 295(A) of the Indian Penal Code, Sections 16, 18, and 20 of Unlawful Activities Prevention Act and Sections 4, 25(1B)(b) of the Arms Act.
The investigations have revealed that accused persons operating as a terror-gang module, conspired to take revenge and that they were radicalized and took inspiration from incriminating videos/audios/ messages being circulated from within and outside India.
“The accused arranged deadly knives/arms and murdered Kanhaiya Lal in reaction to his Facebook post and attacked a co-worker in his shop in broad daylight. They made a video of the killing, released and made it viral. They also shot another threatening video with the intention of striking terror among the people of India”, the agency’s press release stated.
As per the NIA press release the case was initially registered at Dhanmandi, Police Station in Udaipur and was later re-registered by the NIA on June 29, 2022.
Background:
The duo Mohammad Gos and Mohammad Riyaz Akhtar beheaded Kanhaiya Lal for allegedly expressing support for Nupur Sharma, the former BJP leader, in a social media post. Said incident took place in broad daylight on June 28, 2022, and was recorded on video. The duo was initially sent to 14 days Judicial Custody till July 13.
Thereafter, a third accused namely, Mohammad Mohsin was arrested on July 4, 2022, and was sent to Judicial Custody till July 12. The judicial custody of all three was extended till August 1.
The Ministry of Home Affairs had, in its tweet, said that the involvement of any organization and international links will be investigated by the NIA.
