A Supreme Court bench of Justices Indira Banerjee and JK Maheshwari on Wednesday refused urgent listing of a plea seeking arrest of former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma. The counsel for the petitioner mentioned the matter before the bench saying that the plea pertains to her alleged statement on TV on Prophet Mohammad.

The counsel informed the court that the police was not taking action despite complaints being filed. The court, however, refused urgent listing of the plea and asked the counsel to mention the same before the Registrar.

Earlier, a bench of Justices Surya Kant and Pardiwala, on Friday, refused to entertain a plea by Sharma for clubbing of FIRs filed in various states pertaining to the alleged remark.

Also, the observations of the court in the matter flared up controversy as a result of which two letter petitions were addressed to the Chief Justice of India to direct the bench to withdraw the remark. Yesterday, retired judges, bureaucrats and army veterans released a statement against the court’s observations.

National Commission for Women (NCW) has written to the Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police seeking action against Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav over his tweets made on Sharma after the Supreme Court had refused to allow her plea seeking transfer of FIRs filed against her to Delhi.
